Having fun with 404 error pages – Helps in increasing traffic to the website!

The custom 404 error pages are very important for the website to attract more users & increase the web traffic. We get HTTP 404 error when an invalid or wrong URL is requested in the web server. Every time the user request a webpage the request is sent through HTTP from client to server further the webs server will return a status code of the request through the HTTP header.


The number 404 is the response code that is returned from the web server when the specified page or URL is not part of the application. In any sort of communication there is a request and a response and in case of web server when we place a request for the specified URL the web server returns a response code and in case if the web server returns a response code of 404 that describes the specified URL is not valid and 200 is returned if the request is valid.


The Error 404 with a message Page not found is the error page displayed whenever someone asks for a page that is simply not available on your website. The reason behind this is that there may be a link on your site that was wrong or the page might have been recently removed from the site. The web server sends a page that simply says that 404 Page not found as there is no web page to display.


The design of your 404 error page should be similar to the rest of your website. In case of a beautifully designed website but a generic 404 error page is like forgetting to paint a room in your home. You should take the time to make your 404 error page user friendly will let your visitors know you were concerned about your appearance and about making their experience on your site as simple as possible.


You should customize your 404 error page with some Fun flow chart and with some active links to take you to pages of the site you might have been interested in. You can even add humour in some cartoon form. You can even make a link to recent blog posts and suggestions to different pages the user was trying to reach.


Get creative with your 404 error pages as it does not have to be technological or impersonal as so many already are. You can even include whatever you want as long as it matches the tone you have already set with the rest of your website and gives your visitor the information they really need to find what they were looking for in the first place.
